Photography

I have had a passion for photography for over 33 years, both as a record of events in my life, and as my Art. A budding Steve Parrish maybe

Images of events and objects are as subjective to interpretation as beauty is to the eye of the beholder. Everyone knows what they like, and I am trying to find my own style.

Sadly, I have been trying to find my style since 1974 when I bought my first camera in high school

My first "good" camera was a 35mm Minolta XG9, and my second camera was a Minolta X300, both purchased in the eighties. I had three lenses - a Minolta 50mm, a Minolta 28mm and a Tamron 70-210mm with a 2 x Teleconverter. I had also purchased a 2nd Hand Mamiya 645J Medium Format camera with a few accessories like a decent flash gun and some filters. Good equipment to be sure. I then took the next step and taught myself darkroom techniques and outfitted a darkroom in my spare room. I did the odd wedding or two and took photos of conference groups at the resort I worked at. Taking photos for my own pleasure was always a secondary concern. The drawback was always the cost of the film, chemicals, paper and the time it took from shot to print. I lost interest for a while but I still took "happy snaps" of places I visited and kept the equipment in good condition.

My first digital camera was a no name brand bought from the USA over the internet for about $66 in 1999. This was the camera used for the majority of the boat pictures on the other part of this site. In 2005 I was given a Canon A300 digital point and shoot for my birthday and it was kept in my camera bag.

In May of 2006 some lowlife, criminal, good for nothing, waste of oxygen bastard stole my camera bag from my home. It, the thief, took everything as I kept the equipment in one "convenient" carry all. However, we were insured, and our policy was "new for old" so I had the opportunity to upgrade to a pro digital camera.

I only shoot RAW and process the images using either BibblePro, Silkypix, Capture One Pro or Lightroom depending on whether it is a portrait or a landscape image. They are the best programs I could find and they each excel in various elements of the RAW capture. I also have, but do not use much, Photoshop CS3 as I do not believe in too much post processing.

I use ColorVision Spyder2PRO Studio to calibrate my monitors.

I also play with Image Stacker, Photomatrix Pro for HDR images, Pano Tools Assembler for creating panoramas and Startrails. I also utilise DSLR Remote Pro for tethering to a laptop or Pc.

To hone my skills I monitor and am a member of Australian Photography and DigitalSLR, both aimed at being helpful and constructive to the serious amatuer photographer. I am a Registered Subscriber of the AIPP and I have a presence on PBase which hosts some of the images on these pages.

I always keep my kit with me, I'm an opportunistic photographer and I'm always on the lookout for a good shot. This hopefully will also thwart some other lowlife thief who wishes to relieve me of my hard earned posessions (there are surprises for those that do ).

I hope you enjoy the images I capture and find them interesting.
